Using A Zune HD In The UK

Posted January 29th 2010 by in archive

Zune HDPeople have many reasons why they don’t want an iPod, from not liking iTunes to wanting to be a bit different to the rest of the world. If you live in America, one of the great alternatives would be the Zune HD – but unfortunately for us UK based folk, Microsoft (in their infinite wisdom) have decided against bringing the Zune here, at least for the moment. About a month before Christmas I started hankering after one, so started researching its pros and cons, especially those related to use in an ‘unsupported’ country. Having subsequently bought one, I thought I’d share what I experienced.

Lets start with the good news… getting one is easy! I advise a UK based Ebay powerseller (I used a guy called thecheetahexpress). Make sure their reputation etc is good, I find powersellers to be very professional. You could also buy one off Zunethings.co.uk if you’d rather not use Ebay but it will almost certainly cost you a reasonable amount more.

Setting up the software on your PC (no Mac support I’m afraid) is also easy but it does require changing your location within Windows to the United States (Control Panel -> Clock, Language and Region -> Change Location [applicable to Win 7]). Doing this did make me feel slightly dirty but it won’t do anything untoward to your computer, you can change it back after install but I’m not sure if it’ll let the software perform updates if you do (updates are few and far between anyway). Then simply run along to Zune Software Download and it should let you download the software.

The final thing which is a bit of a pain is that to download apps etc you need a US based Windows Live address (you don’t need to do this if you’re only interested in uploading songs, pictures and movies). I just created a new account such as whateveryoufancy@hotmail.com and used a random US postcode. Sign in with that and whabam! Everything will work as well as it would in America and you can download all the free content ’til your heart’s content.

The only problem I can foresee is for the guys that want to use Zune Pass and the market place to buy movies and songs, you can only sign up for that service with a US credit card. However I think there are probably a couple of ways around this, first off if you visit America you could buy the pre-paid Visa gift cards they sell there. Either that or just buy pre-paid Microsoft points and redeem them on your US based account. Unfortunately I’ve yet to try either so don’t take my word as gospel – but I’m fairly confident they would work.

So do I suggest using a Zune HD in the UK? Definitely, I’m loving the experience and it is nice owning that gadget that not many others in the UK have seen before. Is it better the iPod Touch? Well that’s all opinion, personally I prefer the menu system, love the looks and think the OLED screen looks fantastic, however if you’re more interested in the portable computer aspect of the iPhone or iPod Touch it does a good job but cannot live up to the quality and the amount of apps offered. I wanted a PMP and really do think that the Zune HD is the best in its field in that respect.

So that’s my experience, hopefully I’ve helped you come to a decision about what to do. Have I tempted you to look into it further? Or do you already own one in the UK or otherwise? Let me know your experiences or questions down in the comments section below.

Great to see a fellow UK Zune fan, championing the HD and talking about ownership in a land where the Zune is not officially available.

I've had a 30, a 4, 80, 120 and now HD. I guess I'm a Zune-aholic! I don't mind the workaround or having a US based Windows Live ID to access everything bar purchasing from the Marketplace.

I hadn't considered your workarounds to get Microsoft Points. I'll be interested to hear of they work. I'll keep an eye on this post to see if anyone comes back to you about that.

What do I like about the Zune so much? The software, the HD form-factor (I thought the 8, 80 and 120 not too shabby either though) and it will play WMAs and WMVs.

It is NOT an iPod and for some reason that is also in the mix of reasons why I like Zune so much.

Plus, there's Microsoft's knack of often starting out with poor product and refining and refining until it's there. I was prepared to take this journey on their MP3 player and I have absolutely no regrets! I love it!

Hi, congratulations on being the first ever commenter on one of my articles, may there be many more! :)

So far I've only seen one other guy with a Zune in the UK but was too much of a wuss to chase him down the street to see what he thought!

Very impressed with your Zune history, there can't be many people that can claim to have bought the set, and your definitely right about Microsoft. Its usually their third iteration (with the exception of the Xbox) which seems to perfect the product.

  • Arctic UK says:

Happy to be the first commenter! And yes, may there be many more.

And it looks as first glance like the full Zune set but I skipped the 8 ;-)

I’ve got a spare HD on ebay right now, if anyone wants one?

omfg you are a bloody legend… i have been waiting for an answer to if the zune hd will ever be released to UK but instead i found a way around it. Good job but will it ever be released for UK? if not ill just use your advice

    • It doesn’t look as though there will be a release in the UK, they have been ‘looking into it’ internationally for well over a year now – for the entire Zune lineup. Bit of a pain for those who don’t wish to walk the mundane road of iPod ownership! Personally, I’d take Ben’s advice and buy yourself a nice new Zune HD from the states! (the powerseller he bought from was very helpful, but there are others if you want!)

    • Yeah Euan pretty much summed it up. Definitely a worth while purchase in my opinion, my only warning, like I mention in the article is that I don't know whether my methods for paying for stuff in the marketplace work. I would never use it anyway so i'm not worried but if you would its maybe something you should consider.

  • Miquel Gramberg says:

The new Zune browser is surprisingly good, but not as good as the iPod’s. It works well, but isn’t as fast as Safari, and has a clunkier interface. If you occasionally plan on using the web browser that’s not an issue, but if you’re planning to browse the web alot from your PMP then the iPod’s larger screen and better browser may be important.

    • Not totally sure how I missed your comment but thanks for responding. Certainly agree with you about the browser, it's ok but Safari definitely trumps it. Like you I hardly use it, the browser and the lack of 3G makes it not worth my while most of the time. Hopefully they'll polish the browser up for the release of Windows Phone 7.

Sorry for posting on an old topic but this seemed like the best article to ask. I am interested in a Zune and understand the need to go to eBay based importers as i am a UK dweller. I merely wish to use the Zune to play my WMA, MP3 and M4A tracks, no movies and barely any pictures. I’m moderately interested in its internet and wifi capabilities but not really in the market etc. All i want is a pure Music player so as to relieve the battery strain off my Android phone. Will it be suitable? Thanks.

    • Hi Andy, good to hear from you. The Zune HD would certainly fulfil your requirements, but as I’m sure you know you could buy something cheaper that would still do what you want. Obviously it wouldn’t be as nice but something like the Sansa Clip might be worth looking at if you’re happy with a no frills ‘pure music player’. In my book the Sansa comes out top of the pile in that category.

Basically I think your decision comes down to whether you want a nice looking, ‘elite’ device and are happy to pay the extra, or are happy with a ‘does what it say on the tin’ alternative as you already have an Android phone. I would heartily recommend the Zune if you decide to go for the former and definitely suggest checking out the Sansa if you like the look of the other option.

Hope that helps, feel free to get back to me with any other questions. :)

I am in the UK and use my Zune in this way. i get my music and videos from various sources and synch it all using the Zune software. I don't need or want the Zune marketplace.

In my opinion the Zune is marvellous for this. It's high quality, great looking and I find it easy to use.

  • Jim says:

Hey, now that Zune is in the UK (and it seems that MS is completely pulling out of the PMP market), what is the Zune HD like to use over here now that there is a bit more you can do with the software?

is it worth me buying one? (i already have a Zune80 but would love the touch screen device (for a little hit on capacity)) and not in the position to get a WP7 device for a while…

    • If you've been looking at getting a ZuneHD give it a week and I think you may be in a fantastic position to get one due to people like me selling theirs once they've got a WP7 device.

I can't say any changes software wise have really affected me (I already had everything I wanted already, I take the marketplace has opened up?), but if you're happy with the Zune80 I'm sure you won't be displeased whatever the case.

      • Andy says:

Heyy, i’ve been looking into a Zune HD i’ve had the old 30gb and the latest 120gb. I was wondering now you can use the zune pass in the UK can you access apps from the Uk or not?

        • Hey, I’ve just had a go with the British account I created for my Windows Phone and can confirm that although Zune pass works (thanks Arctic) if your computer is set to the UK you don’t see the Zune applications in the marketplace so can’t install them. Not sure how much of a problem this is for you, they’re all free so if you change your location everything works fine (you can’t install WP7 applications on the Zune HD unfortunately). Hope that helps! :)

  • Arctic UK says:

Yes, you can use the Zune Pass in the UK with Zune devices not just Windows Phones.

    • Andy says:

Just wondering i don’t know if you know anything about the 120gb and how to connect to a wireless router? I’m having issues with it

  • Andy says:

Rightio, thanks a lot i’m definately considering a Zune Hd now thanks!

  • Dave says:

Hi I live in the UK and this is how I’ve cracked it!
    I have a Zune HD 64gb, also a 32gb
I have a US based live id, and (luckily)a friend in the States who paid for a 12month subscription for the Zune Pass. So I have that valid till Feb 2012, (I have a 3 month subscription that I bought from a US seller on ebay, to which the 12 month will kick in when that runs out in Feb 2011).
The only thing I can’t do is d/load video or TV shows from the Marketplace, but all podcasts, music, apps are available, and using wifi hotspots, and ‘marketplace’ on the menu on my Zune HD, can stream or download these too.
and I get my 10 free credits every month.
with the 12 month for 10 deal with the pass, ($149) it works out about £7.60 per month, which is cheaper than the UK Zune account with double the features, it’s a no brainer!

I still don’t know too many people with an HD though!

    cheers, Dave

    • It’s definitely a shame how much cheaper (and better) the US version of the Zune pass is… at least it’s not all that difficult to use if we want to!

Good to hear from another UK based Zune user, thanks for getting in touch. I’ve still yet to meet someone else who uses one out on the street, I’d love to know how many of us there are.

  • Dave says:

    Hello again,
Just a few words regarding using the Zune Pass with a UK based account. I set up a UK live id and applied and got a trial pass to see how it compares to my US account. Although there is the marketplace to buy songs to stream or download to your collection, and indeed to sync to your player. I was really disappointed to see that podcasts are not there; and ‘marketplace’ is not in the menu on the HD. Also although there are apps for WP7 phones, there is nothing in software that mentions Zune HD. You can of course change the location on your pc to US, but then you cannot log in to the UK account…..#
    on another matter…
I quite fancy one of those nice new Windows phones, but I wonder if I can log in with my US live id account and use the Zune Marketplace on it?

    cheers all
    Dave

    • Yeah, I found that out the other day when testing for Andy, it is a pain but expected I suppose, they don’t want to confuse us with options for devices we can’t even buy.

Re the Windows phone I’ve got one and can’t see why you couldn’t log into a US live account. I assume this is because you’ve got Zune pass until 2012? Unfortunately I can’t really test it for you as you have to basically reset your phone to do so. (Once tied to a Windows tag it’s loathe to let go!).

That being said I can’t see why it wouldn’t work (although it would be annoying as you couldn’t buy anything from the marketplace without a US based credit card). I’ll try to find out from one of my friends for you… someone must be in the same position with a US based Zune pass.

Do let me know what you decide to do about getting a WP7 phone, I’m extremely happy with mine :)

      • Dave says:

Thanks for the reply, regarding the US account I use with my HD, I have no bother downloading and streaming music, and I have bought music too. just add to cart, and buy it with points.
I buy 4000 microsoft points at a time from a *US* ebay seller, after purchase, he emails the code, and I just ‘redeem code’ in the software, and ‘voila’!
(if you bulk buy the points, it works out at roughly 60p per track, cheaper than Amazon etc, and 320kbs)

I tried searching fo the info regarding US id’s to no avail, be great if you hear anything thanks!.
I know you cannot mess around with different id’s on the phone, so I would have to get it right first time.

I’m on 02 and like the look of the HD7, I prefer the Mozart, but I can’t wait till it becomes sim free, I’m not sure I want to risk the ‘unlocking’ procedure, and don’t need Orange logos all over it!

        cheers,
        Dave
** ps, UK based Microsoft Xbox points only work with UK accounts

  • CBrooksC says:

    I’m intrested in getting on.
I want it to be engraved though. where did you buy the zune hd??

    Thanks

    • Hey sorry for the slow reply, depressingly busy at the moment! As I mention in my post I bought my HD from ebay. In order to get it engraved I imagine you’d have to get it from Zune Originals as Dave pointed out. Unfortunately you can’t buy direct in Europe so I imagine you’re going to need either a friend in the USA or a strategically planned holiday if you want an engraving.

      Hope that helps.

  • Dave says:

If you are really interested in getting one; I got my Zune32gb from Amazon.com and the ZuneHD64 from Zune originals, also paid extra for the engraving -it’s a work of art!

  • Dave says:

To CBrooksC, yes I have a friend in the US and used his address for the HD32 from Amazon.com, (he then shipped to me) and he purchased the 64 from Zune originals for me.

And….. regarding the US account sign in issue on WP7…..
I went to the local phone store today, and explaining my dilemma; the salesman kindly offered to open a new phone and try it, and it took my US id, no problem, Marketplace purchases are in $$, but that’s fine as I can now use my Zune Tag with all the benefits, so until the UK version of the marketplace starts to come any where near, I’ll stick with the US id.

    hope this helps someone!

    cheers all

I am always dazzled at people whom compare ALL devices in Apple's market to an Apple product. It seems to be the norm for everything now – Android vs iPhone, iPod vs Zune, Mac vs PC etc.

To be honest it makes great reading, but no answer. IMO i'd opt for a Zune over an iPod, and a Windows Phone 7 handset with Zune capability over an iPhone.

I actually reviewed the Samsung Omnia 7 on Technology Blogged, and fell in love.

    • I think it’s mainly because in most cases it’s a safe bet that someone will have used or seen the iPod/iPhone (I wouldn’t say the same for their computers).

I think the Zune (and now my HTC 7 Mozart, I’m not a fan of Samsung build quality) are fantastic but at the same time have yet to see anyone else with a WP7. Maybe one day we’ll all be comparing things to them.

  • SUSAN L says:

I bought a HTC HD7 a month ago and signed up to the Zune pass. I love the fact I can download unlimited amounts of music both onto my laptop and phone. The interface of the windows phone is far superior to iphone (and this is coming from a former iphone addict). Now looking at buying a ZuneHD and linking it to my account – for my dad, he is looking to move into the digital music age. Is the zuneHD easy to use purely really for music(I mean reaaly simple!?!), how is the sound quality and can you foresee any problems linking this to my UK Zune account (at present only have phone and 1 laptop synched). Thank you in advance.

    • Glad you’re enjoying your new phone. As far as I’m aware you can’t link a ZuneHD to a UK Zune pass subscription, unfortunately I don’t have my Zune anymore having got a WP7 device so I can’t test this. I’ve asked a friend to check it out, I’ll let you know if I’m wrong.

Marketplace etc still isn’t supported in the UK for the ZuneHD but your account should work fine for locally stored music. In order to access the rest of the Zune’s functionality it isn’t hard to set up an American Live ID, all you’d have to do is sign into the correct one when syncing your Zune.

In terms of ease of use I still find the Zune experience to be by far the most intuitive to use and I think the visuals are great. Basically if you go to the Zune Hub of your phone that’s what you’ll get, the GUI for previous music and pinned artists etc is slightly different but overall it’s the same deal. If you think the system on your phone would suit him the Zune HD certainly would as well.

Sounds quality is good, the Zune uses a Wolfson DAC (Digital to Analogue Converter) which is great compared to many others in the marketplace.

Hope that helps, feel free to ask me anything else.

    • Correction, you can use your UK Zune account with a ZuneHD, sorry!

  • SUSAN L says:

Thank you for your quick reply, definitely leaning towards purchasing the zune hd then. I dont know why more people are not aware of Zune and WP7. Hope in the future we will be able to get 10 music credits like in the US and I hope they resolve any problems with the internet browser on phone – very slow at times despite full internet connection. For now tho I am definitely not going back to Apple or Itunes and I never thought I would say that.

    Thanks again.

  • karen says:

Hi there, I just received a zune HD from my brother in the US who swears by them, i love it but am baffled by the lack of abilty to use the apps and marketplace, i am struggling to even use the musid downloads? Is it just me am i missing something, please help :)

    • Hi. In order to download apps in the UK you need to set your computer and account to the US. However I'm surprised you're struggling to download music, I assume you've signed up for a UK based Zune account?

  • Graeme McKeague says:

Hi, Just wanted to confirm if i got a Zune HD that I can my UK Account for the marketplace (for the Zune HD apps) and the UK account for the Zune pass.

I Currently have a WP7 (Omnia 7). I love the zune player, but my sister wants a new mp3 and was hoping she could also use the same zune pass

  • Paul Rippon says:

    64gb zune hd from zunethings.co.uk for £269.99

    or…..

64gb zune hd shipped from amazon in america with 2-4 days priority delivery for £231.98

I know which one I’ll be getting!
