How To Easily Send Large Files Over The Internet

Posted August 15th 2010 by in archive

WeTransferEmail is great for sending small files, but how often have you tried to attach something only to find out that it’s too big? All too often I imagine… It can be incredibly annoying, especially when the damn thing’s a fraction of a megabyte over the limit.

Fortunately help is at hand, in the form of WeTransfer. As I’m sure you’re aware, services which offer help you transfer files aren’t exactly new, in fact some have been around for decades (for those of you that don’t know me I’m slightly prone to exaggeration…). So what does WeTransfer offer that others don’t?

Less… which in this case really is more. If you’ve ever used any of their competitors before you’ll probably be accustomed to scary looking interfaces, a multitude of adverts, account sign-ups, spam emails and/or limited trials.

WeTransfer couldn’t be more simple; go to their site and you’ll be presented with a small form to fill in your details. Simply select the file you want to send, add the email addresses of you and your recipient, type an optional message and you’re done.

WeTransferYou can send up to 2GB in one go and the file is available for download for two weeks, from servers which seem surprisingly fast for a free service. In fact everything works so well that when I first discovered the site I spent a good few minutes trying to discover how on earth they make money.

After a bit of a play I discovered that the alternating backgrounds are actually adverts for a variety of products. They’re all very high quality and actually add to the look and feel of the site (not something that’s true of many other forms of advertisement). I think they’re fantastic, this really could be the future for web adverts, my only worry is not enough people will realise you can click on them… only time will tell.

In fact, my only problem with the site is that it’s based in Flash. Now don’t get me wrong, I’m nothing like dictator Jobs and don’t believe it’s my job to decide what people should and shouldn’t do on the internet, but I’m always more in favour of a well done, HTML based site. Having said they have manage to use Flash extremely well, there’s a distinct lack of 30 second splash screens whilst the site loads, and unnecessary gimmicky transitions aren’t at all evident, so I think I can let it slide.

So there you have it, definitely the site that gets my vote when it comes to large file transfer online. Let me know what you think in the comments below.

P.S. Please do get in contact if you’ve heard of another cool web service like this you think we might like to try out, we’re always on the look out for new ideas!
