Ramp Your Free Dropbox Account Storage Up To Over 20GB

Posted January 18th 2011 by in archive

Free Extra Storage Space For Your Dropbox AccountNowadays loads of us use Dropbox on a daily basis to sync, back up and share our important files. However if your cheap like me and only have a free account you may be starting to run out of space.

Fortunately there are quite a few ways to gain yourself some extra gigabytes, I’m sure you’re aware of of some of these tricks but hopefully I may hit on one or two you’ve missed out on:

  • Complete 5/6 getting started tasks (if you haven’t already done them there should be a getting started link when you sign into the Dropbox website) -250MB
  • Refer your friends – 250MB a friend (max 8Gb)
  • Register as a student – 500MB (plus all referrals now worth 500MB, max 16GB)
  • Tweet and Facebook about Dropbox – 640MB
  • Complete Dropquest 2011 – Finally 1GB of space is up for grabs if you complete the inaugural Dropbox Dropquest, if you’re feeling lazy a walkthrough can be found at Slickdeals. I’m sure this challenge is time limited so get in whilst you have the chance!

Do all of the above and you’re looking at a grand total of 20,390 MB of space, for free!

Hope this helps you to gain some much needed space, if you’re not a user of Dropbox yet I highly recommend it, you can read my review here.

Ninite Installs All Your Apps In One Go

Posted January 16th 2011 by in archive

Ninite Installs All Your Apps In One GoWe all have a set of applications we install on every new computer/fresh installation of Windows we ever have, things like Skype, Google Chrome and Spotify come to mind. The problem is that if you’re anything like me that list of applications can be fairly huge, and re-downloading and installing them all starts to take up a huge amount of time.

Ninite offers an elegant (and free – Kirsten!) solution to this problem. Simply visit the site, pick the software you wish to install from the lists offered and click “Get Installer”. You should now have a program that, once run, installs all of the applications you selected, how easy was that.

Remove Unnecessary Programs To Help Your PC Boot Faster

Posted January 13th 2011 by in archive

Some would say that the title of this article is as obvious as saying “Don’t throw bricks at your windows”. Bearing in that you can buy some extremely tough varieties of glass, (!) the problem many people find is that it’s hard to put into practice.

I’m not saying it’s impossible, in fact I imagine you may have spent a couple of hours troubleshooting your relatives computers over the Christmas holiday, wowing them with your knowledge of msconfig and its friends, but you can’t help but think it should be easier.

Well to put it bluntly it is. There’s a free program out there called Soluto which can tell you exactly what programs are slowing your computer down, creating an easy and user friendly way to filter out the crud that builds up on your PC over time.

Get Your Geek On With Facebook Shortcuts

Posted January 6th 2011 by in archive

Facebook ShortcutsDid you know that Facebook has a load of inbuilt shortcuts to help you navigate around the site quicker? No? Neither did I… fantastic, although I’m sure they’re going to impact the amount of time we all waste on Facebook everyday.

The How-To-Geek has compiled a great list of them, most of which are based on alt + number (save for alt + m for a new message and alt + ? for a new search).

Go check it if you’re interested, even if it’s only so you can show off to your friends!

Note: For Firefox you have to add a shift key to the equation and IE requires you to hit the enter key after each shortcut. However those of using “proper” browsers should be fine!

Metro Home – Windows Phone Styled Desktop Widget

Posted January 6th 2011 by in archive

A fantastic little app from the same guys who developed HTC Home (a desktop widget based on HTC Sense Android skin) was released recently, this time based on Windows Phone 7′s Metro theme.

If you’re a fan of the WP7 styling you’re sure to like this, all it does is tell you the date, time and weather forecast, as well as including a picture slide show, but the implementation is spot on.

The program is small and lightweight and seems to work very smoothly, the best way to see what I mean is via video so I decided it was high time I got into video casting. Check it out (make sure to watch in full screen at 1080p if you can) and let me know what you think.
