Metro Home – Windows Phone Styled Desktop Widget

Posted January 6th 2011 by in archive

A fantastic little app from the same guys who developed HTC Home (a desktop widget based on HTC Sense Android skin) was released recently, this time based on Windows Phone 7′s Metro theme.

If you’re a fan of the WP7 styling you’re sure to like this, all it does is tell you the date, time and weather forecast, as well as including a picture slide show, but the implementation is spot on.

The program is small and lightweight and seems to work very smoothly, the best way to see what I mean is via video so I decided it was high time I got into video casting. Check it out (make sure to watch in full screen at 1080p if you can) and let me know what you think.

Automatically Hibernate Windows Home Server/PC

Automatically Hibernate Windows Home Server/PCA few years ago I spent an inordinate amount of time trying to find a program which would automatically turn my Windows Home Server on and off to save power. After countless searches I gave up, only to stumble across the perfect program a few weeks ago.

Extend The Battery Life Of Your Phone

Posted December 31st 2010 by in archive

Extend Phone Battery LifeAs technology gets more and more impressive an increasingly large amount of pressure is put on your battery. Unfortunately for us they haven’t improved anywhere near as fast as we’d like (or even at all really), leaving us struggling for juice more and more…

I’m sure you’ve heard of many different battery enhancing tricks, especially for phones, such as lowering your screen brightness or turning off blue-tooth, but one that may surprise you is a charging technique I discovered when I first got my HTC 7 Mozart (Windows Phone 7).

Pins Tabs In Google Chrome

Posted December 24th 2010 by in archive

Pin Tabs In Google ChromeI’m a huge advocate for Google Chome and have used it as my sole web browser since the day of its launch. However, for whatever reason, I’ve never realised that there’s an option to pin tabs by right clicking on them!

Then, whenever you load Chrome these tabs will open, making it fantastic for your most frequently visited websites (I suggest you create one for Gizunk!).

Unfortunately it isn’t implemented perfectly, which can be infuriating. For instance I’ve found when using multiple instances of Chrome is can trip it up on reload and forget your pinned tabs, hopefully a bug which will be ironed out if more of us use this feature, it’s definitely still worth a look now!

Been using this for years? Apologies, I certainly lose geek points for not discovering it until now but it seems like it’s a relatively unknown feature!

Create A Fake Virus To ‘Impress’ Your Friends

Posted December 20th 2010 by in archive

Create A Fake Virus To 'Impress' Your FriendsLet’s be honest, if you’re into technology and watch a film with a seemingly unstoppable geek in it like Die Hard 4 you can’t help but want to be that guy (don’t agree..? Well you’re evidently not as cool as I am!).

Unfortunately hacking computers isn’t exactly easy, until now! Simply copy the following into a notepad document and save it, then sit back and feel good about yourself (Windows only I’m afraid). –

X5O!P%@AP[4\PZX54(P^)7CC)7}$EICAR-STANDARD-ANTIVIRUS-TEST-FILE!$H+H*

If you did everything right (and if I’m honest it would take a fairly spectacular effort not to), you should now be seeing a warning from your anti-virus software (you do have anti-virus software don’t you?). In reality it’s just an inbuilt way to test anti-virus software but still… you’re relatives don’t have to know that when you show them just how good you are with computers over Christmas do they?

P.S. As evident from my girlfriend’s expression your significant other may not be so impressed, don’t let it get to you, they just don’t understand these things!
