Skype App For iPhone Update

Sunday, July 25th, 2010

Good news! Skype have just updated their iPhone app to take full advantage of iOS 4, bring the much sought-after functionality of backgrounding the app. That’s right – you can now have Skype permanently running in the background on your iPhone! Ok, so I’m the only one who’s genuinely excited about that, but it is a handy feature, and is not noticeably detrimental to battery life (on which I keep a keen eye, so I’d have noticed!).

Skype will also let you receive calls while the phone is locked. If you hadn’t downloaded the Skype App for your iPhone yet, you should know that the app allows you to make calls over WiFi and 3G, and of course instant message over either, as well. One last thing to note, folks – as backgrounding an app obviously requires multitasking, this will only be supported on the iPhone 3g(s) and iPhone 4.

LogMeIn – Online Remote Desktop Service

LogMeIn Logo wide

…. And we’re back! Actually, that’s not fair – Ben is the only one around here with a good excuse not to have been posting regular articles recently! I’m sure you’ve all missed me – and you won’t find any sarcasm around here (see what I did there?)! Anyway, I digress. Today I’ll be filling you in on, you guessed it (or read it in the title, durrrr), a sweet online service which will allow you to remote-desktop any computer you fancy installing it on. It’s called LogMeIn. Kinda catchy, I guess. That’s beside the point. I guess I am easily distracted, huh?

Air Video iPhone app

Well hello there, Internet! How are you? Why, it’s been a while now hasn’t it? Now now, there’ll be time for catch-up’s later; right now we have to get down to the good stuff. So a few days ago I was browsing through the App Store on my iPhone looking for something I’ve been trying to find for a while: a decent application to allow me to stream video that already exists within my home network. I happened upon a superb app, one which any self-respecting iPhone owner & media geek should certainly go check out – after reading this brief overview, of course! It’s name is Air Video, and I’ll tell you all about it just past the ‘Read More’ link. Come join me, won’t you?

Facebook App Released For Zune HD – Doesn't work

ZuneHD

So Microsoft has finally got around to releasing a Facebook app for the Zune HD, something I think all owners have been clamouring for since its release. Unfortunately, it doesn’t work, well at least not yet. At the moment all I can access through it are my notifications, the albums I’ve uploaded and my basic info. Microsoft are certainly aware of the problem as you can see from Zune’s twitter feed, so fingers crossed it shouldn’t be that long until it’s fully functional.

I’ll do a proper review once the app’s up and running in a way that’s actually works but initial impressions are good. The UI is nice and clean, as you come to expect when using the Zune, and as far as I can tell includes all the functionality you’d want from an app like this.

Now come on Microsoft, as far as I understand it the reason you’ve not opened up third party app support is so you can control the quality of the apps. I imagine someone’s getting a fair old face-slapping somewhere right about now!

P.S. To all you iPhone/iPod Touch owners, I know you’ve had a Facebook app since time began, forgive me for getting excited about something so mundane! :)

Facebook App For iPhone Updated; Contact Sync & Push Notifications

Facebook App Icon

Hello interweb, my old friend… I’ve come to speak to you again. So it’s been a while, huh? My apologies! Cyber-slapping in retribution aside, today I’ll be talking about one of the more useful iPhone apps – Facebook – and  more specifically an interesting update it has recently had.

So as I mentioned, the Facebook app had a major update, around a month ago (I know, I’m behind the times…. shocking effort…) which included the ability to receive ‘push‘ updates & synchronisation of the important bits of your Facebook contacts with your iPhone. In case you don’t already know, a ‘Push’ update is one that doesn’t require you to connect to anything to get it, i.e you can have your iPhone in your pocket and as soon as you get a wall post/ comment etc, it will instantly notify your iPhone and pop up a little notification – not unlike a text, for example. I wrote an article a little while back explaining push and so-forth for GMail on your iPhone, you can find it here.
